Moon Watcher In Fine Art Colored Pencil

MOON WATCHER is the name of one of our prehistoric ancestors, a leader within his tribe, who learns from “an alien intelligence” how to use the large, heavy bones of a dead herbivore as a lethal club to kill his food, his predators and members of the rival tribes. This of course is the first epic movement in Stanley Kubrick’s unparalleled cinematic achievement 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. It is also an epic moment in man’s evolution from easy prey and a grubber for insects to a hunter and a killer. What knocks me out everytime I see this scene is the almost unhinged ecstatic exhiliration that Moon Watcher feels as he begins to realize the significance of what he’s discovered, even if he doesn’t fully understand it. I wanted to try to relive that seminanal moment in this drawing/painting in colored pencil. Capturing that ecstacy is like catching lightening in a bottle.
