SOLDIER, BATTLE OF ANGHIARI is a portrait study after one of the dozens of amazing drawings by Leonardo da Vinci in preparation for a great mural in Palazzo Vecchio. It was to be a companion piece to Michaelangelo’s “Battle of Cascina” commissioned at the same time. Neither commission was finished. Leonardo’s experimental paste designed to adhere the paint to the wall slid to the floor with a sudden increase in humidity and that was just the beginning of his problems. We know this warrior is about to be involved in the fight from Leonardo’s drawing.
