JULIUS CEASAR is a portrait study in graphite after one of my favorite drawings by Andrea del Sarto. It was in preparation for his oil painting, “Triumph of Caesar.” I can see the striking profile in perfect relief, and the volume and mass of the head. I can feel the unmistakable, three-dimensional sense of the ruler’s power.
